Random background charges and Coulomb blockade in one - dimensional tunnel junction arrays
نویسنده
چکیده
We have numerically studied the behavior of one dimensional tunnel junction arrays when random background charges are included using the “orthodox” theory of single electron tunneling. Random background charge distributions are verified in both amplitude and density. The use of a uniform array as a transistor is discussed both with and without random background charges. An analytic expression for the gain near zero gate voltage in a uniform array with no background charges is derived. The gate modulation with background charges present is simulated. 73.23.Hk,73.40.Gk Typeset using REVTEX 1

0 One and two dimensional tunnel junction arrays in weak Coulomb blockade regime - absolute accuracy in thermometry
We have investigated one and two dimensional (1D and 2D) arrays of tunnel junctions in partial Coulomb blockade regime. The absolute accuracy of the Coulomb blockade thermometer is influenced by the external impedance of the array, which is not the same in the different topologies of 1D and 2D arrays. We demonstrate, both by experiment and by theoretical calculations in simple geometries, that ...

متن کاملCoulomb blockade and coherent single-cooper-pair tunneling in single Josephson junctions.
We have measured the current-voltage characteristics of small-capacitance single Josephson junctions at low temperatures ( T< or =0.04 K), where the strength of the coupling between the single junction and the electromagnetic environment was controlled with one-dimensional arrays of dc SQUIDs. We have clearly observed Coulomb blockade of Cooper-pair tunneling and even a region of negative diffe...
متن کاملDynamical Coulomb blockade of shot noise.
We observe the suppression of the finite frequency shot noise produced by a voltage biased tunnel junction due to its interaction with a single electromagnetic mode of high impedance. The tunnel junction is embedded in a λ/4 resonator containing a dense SQUID array providing it with a characteristic impedance in the kΩ range and a resonant frequency tunable in the 4-6 GHz range. Such high imped...
متن کاملCoulomb blockade thermometry using a two-dimensional array of tunnel junctions
We have measured current-voltage characteristics of two-dimensional arrays of small tunnel junctions at temperatures from 1.5 K to 4.2 K. This corresponds to thermal energies larger than the charging energy. We show that 2D-arrays can be used as primary thermometers in the same way as 1D-arrays, and even have some advantages over 1D-arrays. We have carried out Monte Carlo simulations, which agr...
